The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus
The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus is remembered as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Built in the 4th century BC for Carian satrap Mausolus and his wife Artemisia II, the monumental tomb lent its name to the rulers’ memory and became the origin of the Latin word mausoleum.
Today you can visit the mausoleum area near Turgutreis Street in central Bodrum, among the remains of ancient Halicarnassus. Stone blocks, column bases and displayed finds hint at Hellenistic grandeur. Much of the mausoleum was lost over time to earthquakes and quarrying, but some stone used in Bodrum Castle is thought to have come from here—linking castle and mausoleum in history.
On our Segway tours we offer an outside approach to the mausoleum with guided commentary; museum access and rules may vary. If you want to know Bodrum beyond the beach, this layered story appears as a short stop on our route.
